The financial going was tough but with so many CCM motorcycles for sale and sold, the CCM Parts and CCM Spares division of the business was highly profitable, so profitable in fact that it kept the production side going.

CCM Enduro

However, hard times were on the way again. Although CCM motorbikes Bolton had a complete line up in their stock of a CCM Enduro version based on the CCM motocrossers, a tightening recession hit the whole motorcycle industry. This delayed the release of a range of CCM Little Hiro’s and they subsequently missed the sales peak.

CCM Four-Stroke Trials Bike

All this was publicity. In the past CCM Motorcycles had attracted big sponsorship names such as Camel and Castrol, LPS Lubricants and Dunlop. Although these and other sponsorship deals helped them and the popularity of CCM Motocross bikes, they still needed something that would boost sales and demand. As well as starting to design his own CCM bike forks put into place for a CCM trials bike, the first not being a CCM two-stroke but a CCM four-stroke trials bike.

CCM Spare Parts Abroad

After seeing the CCM riding, White Helmets Display Team the Sultan wanted a similar team of his very own. Ordering 54 bikes, CCM spares and CCM tools meant he helped CCM out of their monetary problems.

CCM Engine Parts

At this time CCM was self sufficiently building CCM engine parts and eventually moved to much bigger premises. This was a much needed move but also very costly. So costly in fact that it took the Sultan of Oman to get them through it!

CCM British Championship

Back home they did much better with a CCM British Championship victory.Success meant bigger demand and this in turn meant that they needed more room. This was made even more prominent when Clews bought more liquidated stock parts for engines and needed somewhere to house them.

CCM British Championship

Back home they did much better with a CCM British Championship victory.
Success meant bigger demand and this in turn meant that they needed more room. This was made even more prominent when Clews bought more liquidated stock parts for engines and needed somewhere to house them.

CCM Grand Prix

The company continued to grow with over half its 1974 stock going abroad. The team also went abroad competing in their first Grand Prix in Austria and French Grand Prix. CCM didn’t do so well but the experience was a learning curve for both them and the design of the bike.

Side Car Cross was a niche market that Clews also stepped into building an engine for Jack Matthews with which he rode to success in the British Sidecar Trials Championship.

CCM Factory Team

Clews was determined to run a factory team in motocross events such as the Lancashire Grand National. The team competed to great success and eventually set off to test their metal in the States with rider Bob Wright entering all 12 rounds of the Trans - AMA series. Motocross racing in the U.S.A was tough but CCM did ok, especially in increasing their profile and thus export sales.

Monday, 20 July 2009

After selling part of the business they opened a small factory in Bolton, registering the company as Clews Competition Machines and so CCM was born and already making MX bikes.
CCM’s were competition bikes attracting new customers and established motocross men alike, many of whom became CCM works riders.

Monday, 13 July 2009

In the early 70’s BSA’s Small Heath Plant shut down and the opportunistic Clews headed one down to the production factory, coming away with a dozen bike frames for a bargain price. The first lot of bikes he made from these were called the Clews Strokas but this was really the dawn of the CCM name.

Monday, 6 July 2009

Not a problem for an engineer who had already made his own bike. With his technical ability he set out and built his own professional machine. Clews did build this bike for his own use but after someone offered to buy it the businessman in Clews took over and the obvious thing to do was earn some money and then build another one.

CCM History

Aged 16 Alan Clews got a job as an engineer, until running and expanding his wife's family business. At the same time as this he was entering competitions on his trials bike including centre trials and the North West Championship.

As soon as he could afford it he went to compete in France on his self built custom scrambler.
He turned into a good scrambles rider and competed all over Europe.
His own biked worked well but he really wanted a works BSA 500cc Scrambler, but BSA wouldn’t sell him one.
