CCM Factory Team

Clews was determined to run a factory team in motocross events such as the Lancashire Grand National. The team competed to great success and eventually set off to test their metal in the States with rider Bob Wright entering all 12 rounds of the Trans - AMA series. Motocross racing in the U.S.A was tough but CCM did ok, especially in increasing their profile and thus export sales.

After selling part of the business they opened a small factory in Bolton, registering the company as Clews Competition Machines and so CCM was born and already making MX bikes.
CCM’s were competition bikes attracting new customers and established motocross men alike, many of whom became CCM works riders.

In the early 70’s BSA’s Small Heath Plant shut down and the opportunistic Clews headed one down to the production factory, coming away with a dozen bike frames for a bargain price. The first lot of bikes he made from these were called the Clews Strokas but this was really the dawn of the CCM name.

Not a problem for an engineer who had already made his own bike. With his technical ability he set out and built his own professional machine. Clews did build this bike for his own use but after someone offered to buy it the businessman in Clews took over and the obvious thing to do was earn some money and then build another one.
